Mattel Introduces Its First Visually Impaired and Down Syndrome Dolls
Visually impaired Barbie and Barbie with Down syndrome enable more children to see their reflection at playtime. Blind Barbie is the result of a collaboration between Mattel and the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB). Every detail of the doll, from her look to her posture and packaging, is created with the blind and partially sighted in mind. The doll comes with a crutch to help her walk and sunglasses to protect against light sensitivity. In addition, the new Barbie has specially textured clothes so that visually impaired children can play more comfortably.
Last year, the first Barbie with Down syndrome was a huge success. Mattel then partnered with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to create another black Barbie. This new Down syndrome Barbie pays tribute to Down syndrome awareness and celebrates the special and beautiful diversity of the Down syndrome community. Barbie's outfit, however, makes a subtle reference to chromosome 21 with three arrows embedded in some of the hearts on her dress.
With these dolls, the Barbie Fashionistas line includes more than 175 dolls representing a wide range of ethnicities, abilities, and body types. The 2024 dolls, including visually impaired Barbie and Black Barbie with Down syndrome, are available for $10.99.
