Starbucks' New CEO's Privileges Spark Controversy
Starbucks offered a $10 million cash signing bonus and millions in stock-based compensation to entice its new CEO. The coffee giant also did not insist that the new CEO move to its headquarters in Seattle.
Instead, outgoing Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol will be able to continue living at his home in Southern California and commute to Starbucks' headquarters on a corporate jet.
The deal puts Niccol in a relatively rare position in the US and shows how committed Starbucks is to bringing him on board. Corporate advisors say most companies still prefer their CEOs to live close to headquarters, but there are some important cases where a senior leader lives and works elsewhere.
