Meta Blocks Sensitive Topics in Threads

Meta is preventing users from searching for sensitive topics in the Threads application. Searches related to vaccines, such as "covid," "coronavirus," "covid-19," and "covid vaccines," as well as searches like "gore" and "nude," are restricted. These limitations are aimed at preventing the spread of controversial content on the Threads platform.

Following the revelation of these limitations by The Washington Post, Meta confirmed that it has temporarily blocked user searches for sensitive content. The Threads application currently offers this feature to users in English and Spanish-speaking countries.

Meta's decision to impose these limitations is seen as a measure against misinformation and potentially harmful content. The company's CEO, Adam Mosseri, stated that Meta is working to enhance user safety by learning from past mistakes on this matter.

Meta had previously implemented similar restrictions on the Facebook and Instagram platforms. Interventions were made, especially regarding content associated with specific hashtags like QAnon, and search results on sensitive topics like vaccines were cleaned up. Content directing users to official sources was also shared.

The duration of these limitations in Meta's Threads application and their impact will become clearer in the coming days. However, the company remains committed to ensuring user safety and access to accurate information.
