Meta Removes Beauty Filters
Meta Removes Beauty Filters
Face filters entered our lives with Snapchat in 2015 and found their place in applications such as Instagram and TikTok over time. The trend, which started with filters such as puppy dogs, rabbit ears, etc., took a new shape with unreal beauty standards such as face smoothing, nose reduction, and lip plumping.
There is a radical change in the use of augmented reality filters on social media platforms. As of January 14, more than 2 million beauty filters designed by creators on Instagram have been removed. Meta's 140 official filters will remain active. Meta explained that it made the decision to remove them because it wanted to focus on higher-priority products. In this process, the company will emphasize new augmented reality-based devices, especially Orion AR (virtual reality) glasses.
According to experts, filters designed with unrealistic beauty standards deeply affect people's body perception. While some users welcome this decision on the grounds that it will pave the way for a natural and realistic understanding of beauty, others see it as an intervention in freedom of expression.
